Ante Natal Clinic

Midwives from Ormskirk Hospital attend each Friday afternoon. Once you discover you are pregnant you should book in to see a GP who will arrange subsequent antenatal appointments and check which hospital team you want your antenatal care from

Expectant mums and dads in Skelmersdale can now sign up for lessons in parenthood.

A new programme of Parentcraft Classes has been launched in the town to provide first time parents with support and advice.

The four-week courses will take place on Tuesday afternoons between 1.30pm and 3pm. They will alternate between three venues - the First Steps Children's Centre, St John's Children's Centre and Park Children's Centre.

Run by midwives and health visitors, the antenatal classes will cover all aspects of pregnancy, birth and looking after a new baby.

Health visitor Amanda Claeys said: "The course provides a step by step guide to pregnancy, birth and beyond. All the basics are covered including labour, pain relief, bringing baby home and feeding. It's a great way to learn the basics and meet other expectant parents in the area."

Anyone who wishes to book a place on the Parentcraft Classes should call Park Children's Centre on 01695 554535.

Child Development Clinic

Child development checks are mostly done by the Health Visitor, you will receive an appointment direct from them. Baby's 6 week checks are done by GPs here in the surgery. Book to see the GP at the appropriate time and tell the receptionist it is for a 6 week check.

Family Planning

These are done by any GP or practice nurse. We can advise and prescibe all methods including barrier methods, oral contraception (the pill), progesterone only (mini pill), depot injections (long acting injection every 12 weeks).

For sterilisation (vasectomy or laproscopic sterilisation) patients should first book to see a GP.

For IUCD (coil) fitting and contraceptive implants we offer advise only and the actual fitting is at one of the PCT run family planning clinics:

Travel Clinic

If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required. There is further information about countries and vaccinations required on the links below

It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.

Most travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because travel vaccination is not included in the services provided by the NHS and therefore is a chargeable service.

Non-NHS Services

Patients should be aware that fees may be charged for services not covered by the NHS contract. These include:-

private certificates
reports supporting private health insurance claims
other non NHS medical reports.

Fees may also be charged for other special purposes such as:-

HGV and PSV licences
elderly driver’s fitness to drive
fitness to travel etc.

The fee scale is recommended by the BMA and details are available from the receptionists.
